How God Speaks and What Is Taking Place Within You
Introduction: Beginning with Genesis
There is no better place to begin than at the beginning.
Genesis does not present man as random—it reveals design.
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
— Genesis 2:7 KJV
This is not just history.
It shows how man was formed—and what is taking place within you.
How Man Was Formed
The body was formed from the dust of the ground.
— The part of you that interacts with the natural world.
The spirit came from the breath of God.
— The spirit of man, the part of you that receives from God.
— This is not the Holy Spirit, but the human spirit given by God.
The soul is what man became when the body received the breath of life.
— Your mind, your emotions, and your will.
Think of water and cold temperature.
Water by itself is one thing.
Cold temperature by itself is another.
But when water comes under cold, something new is formed: ice.
Ice is not just water, and it is not just temperature.
It is the result of both.
In the same way, dust was one thing, and the breath of God was another.
When God breathed into the body, something new came forth:
man became a living soul.
Like ice, the soul carries the result of both.
It is connected to the body,
and it is connected to the spirit.
Because of this, the soul can respond in two directions:
to the body through the natural world,
and to the spirit through what is received from God.
The Simple Truth
You are not just a body.
You are:
a spirit, with a soul, living in a body.
This is what is taking place within you.
The Missing Understanding
Many believers understand their soul better than their spirit.
They know what they are thinking.
They know what they are feeling.
They know what they want to do.
But they do not always know what their spirit is receiving from God.
This is where confusion begins.
A strong thought is not always the spirit.
A deep feeling is not always the spirit.
A firm decision is not always the spirit.
The mind thinks.
The emotions feel.
The will chooses.
But the spirit receives from God.
So when a believer does not understand the spirit, they try to follow God by:
thinking harder,
feeling stronger,
or trying harder.
But this is not how God leads.
God is Spirit, and He speaks to the spirit of man.
The soul was never meant to lead.
It was meant to respond.
What Is Flesh and What Is Spirit
Jesus makes this clear in Gospel of John:
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
— John 3:6 KJV
The body responds to the natural world.
The spirit receives from God.
The soul stands in between—and responds to both.
Where You Are Living
Your soul is where you experience life:
your thoughts,
your feelings,
your decisions.
But your soul is always receiving:
from the outside, through the body,
and from within, through the spirit.
You are always responding to one of them.
The Role of the Soul
The soul is not evil.
Your mind, emotions, and will have a purpose.
But they were never meant to lead.
They were meant to respond to what the spirit receives from God.
This can be seen from the beginning.
In Genesis, God did not place the knowledge of good and evil inside of man.
He placed it outside of man—on a tree.
And He commanded man not to eat from it.
This shows something important:
Man was not created to determine good and evil for himself.
Man is finite.
His knowledge is limited.
His understanding is limited.
He cannot see the full outcome of a thing.
To rightly determine good from evil, one would need perfect knowledge, perfect wisdom, and the ability to see the end from the beginning.
Only God has that.
This is why God did not place the knowledge of good and evil inside of man.
Man was not created to define truth.
He was created to receive truth from God.
When the soul leads, man begins to decide for himself what is good and what is evil.
But when the spirit leads, man receives truth from God.
What Is Happening Inside You
Inside you, more than one voice is present.
Your thoughts are analyzing.
Your emotions are reacting.
But deeper than both, your spirit is present.
When your spirit speaks, it does not explain.
It does not reason.
It does not argue.
It knows.
Where Confusion Begins
When the spirit is not recognized, the soul takes over.
The mind begins to reason.
The thoughts begin to question.
Now you are trying to figure out what was never meant to be figured out.
The spirit receives truth.
The mind tries to explain it.
When the mind leads, clarity is lost.
Not because truth changed—
but because the source was ignored.
Learning to Recognize the Spirit
The spirit does not think, feel, or decide.
It receives—and it knows.
You recognize it by what is settled within you.
What This Looks Like
There are times when something is clear inside you—
but you cannot explain why.
Your mind may question it.
Your emotions may not agree.
Yet inwardly, it is settled.
That is your spirit.
What Often Happens Next
Then your mind begins:
“Does that make sense?”
“What if I’m wrong?”
Now you move away from knowing—
and into reasoning.
Recognizing the Difference
There are moments when your thoughts are loud…
but something deeper within you remains quiet and steady.
There are moments when your emotions are strong…
but something within you says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
That difference matters.
The Spirit of Man and the Holy Spirit
The spirit of man is what God gave in the beginning.
The Holy Spirit is God Himself.
They are not the same—but they are meant to connect.
God relates to man through the spirit.
How the Holy Spirit Speaks
The Holy Spirit knows.
He does not reason.
He does not debate.
He speaks truth.
And that truth is received in the spirit—
not figured out,
but known.
The Inner Conflict
This is why Scripture says in Galatians:
“The flesh lusteth against the Spirit…”
— Galatians 5:17 KJV
The flesh pulls outward.
The spirit draws inward.
And your soul feels the tension.
Final Awareness
Most people live aware of what they think and feel.
But there is something deeper.
There is a place in you that knows before you think
and remains steady when your emotions are not.
That is your spirit.
You are not just thinking your way through life.
You are not just feeling your way through life.
You are already receiving something now—
from the outside,
and from within.
Final Question
So the question is not:
What do you think?
What do you feel?
But—
What is your spirit receiving…
and are you aware of it?
